The outstanding performance by the Woshishije Cultural Group is without a doubt one of the memorable moments of the just ended dance lessons for international students.

As one of the annual activities of Woshishije, international students from Europe and the United States received the art training in Ghanaian traditional dance forms, as well as drumming, dance, Ghanaian xylophone, and other instruments.

Woshishije Cultural Group pieces reflect lived experiences and cultural frameworks through the unity of rhythm and movement. The group’s wide-ranging repertoire emerges from a creative combination of indigenous, imaginative, and contemporary sources. Through this repertoire, Woshishije Cultural Group aims to unite, educate, and entertain audiences, tourists, students and researchers while representing Ghana and African traditions around the world.

The 3-week programme took place at the auditorium of the Department of Dance, School of Performance at the University of Ghana campus.

Some of the traditional dances the troupe showcased included Atsiagbeko and Tokwei (from Volta Region); Kete, Adowa and Mmensuon (Ashanti Region) and Damba Takai (Northern Region).

According to the Master Drummer Bright Mensah “it is always a privilege to teach someone about our culture”, Woshishije capitalised on this opportunity and taught a master class demonstrating the process of the festival which includes the dances that are performed in some parts of the country as well as the unique drums used to perform these dances”.

Mr. Mensah also expressed appreciation to the Head of Dance Department for paving the way for the troupe to use their facilities for the dance workshop.
