Police in the Ashanti Region have restored calm at Barekese in the Atwima District, after some angry youth attempted to attack the chief of the area, Nana Amoapem Brenya II at his palace.

There was mayhem at Barekese in the early hours of Sunday, August 21, 2022, when the irate youth attacked Nana Amoapem Brenya II’s palace whiles preparing to celebrate Akwasidae, a sacred festival observed by most Akan speaking people.

The youth had recently blamed the traditional ruler for the lack of development in the Barekese enclave and accused him of selling lands meant for the community without using the money to develop Barekese.

They also accused him of allegedly hiring thugs to attack land owners in the area.

However, it took the intervention of heavy police personnel on Sunday to protect the chief and also prevent the youth from besieging the palace.

Some of the youth said: “We [the youth of Barekese] keep suffering because of him [because] he has deployed land guards to terrorise us.

“We are appealing to the Manhyia Palace [Office of the Asante Overlord] to intervene. We can’t live with this man,” tghe irate expressed their displeasure in a viral video media.

The Ashanti Regional Police command has since deployed more security to the Barekese community in the Atwima District to ensure no harm is caused.
