The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken a swipe at the National Democratic Congress for criticisms of the incumbent government.

The NDC which is the biggest opposition party has been critical of the government, especially following the rocketing price of fuel, depreciation of the cedi to the dollar, high inflation rate and factors including the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on bystander countries, among others.

The party has blamed the challenges on the government’s lack of innovative ideas to turn the fortunes of the country around to improve the living conditions of the nation’s people.

But reacting to the comments, the NPP Deputy Communications Director, Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, bastardised the opposition party, pointing accusing fingers at the erstwhile John Mahama administration.

According to Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, the NDC is responsible for the current economic woes of the country, having misgoverned the country before the NPP assumed the seat of government.

Defending the government, he argued that “before the Covid-19 pandemic, Akufo-Addo administration managed to move Ghana’s economic growth from a disappointing 3.4% under Mahama to around 8%. Even with Covid-19 impacts and the Ukraine/Russia shockwaves, there is fiscal policy achievements.

“Indeed, in the midst of all the challenges faced by the NPP government, namely, rising price of fuel on the global market and the exchange rate between the dollar and the cedi, as well as the global economic effect of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with their attendant effects on the country and the people, the NPP government has managed to achieve a 5% GDP.”

He continued: “On the other hand, under the erstwhile Mahama administration, the economy was run aground even though there was no Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.

“It is true that much of the current happenings in the economy naturally reflect recent world events, the extent to which our economy itself is affected is a direct consequence of the last 8 years of the NDC’s misgovernance.”

Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu thus maintained that the NDC cannot be better managers of the economy and as such the propagandists of the opposition party must bow down their heads in shame
