The Ghana Health Service is calling for enhanced public sensitization on rabies following a rise in rabies cases and deaths in the Ashanti Region.
In an alert issued to all health facilities, the Regional Health Directorate confirmed the outbreak of rabies cases as well as deaths in three districts within the region.
A September 12 statement sighted by angelonline.com.gh reads as follows: “As of Monday, 12th September 2022, the region had recorded a total of 4 confirmed cases, and 1 probable cause. The cases were reported from Asante Akim South, Bosomtwe and Kwabre East.”
“The case fatality rate was 100%”, the statement added.
The GHS therefore outlined four public health actions to be undertaken including “enhanced community/public sensitization on rabies.”
It also called for improved case search for rabies in health facilities and a follow up and treatment of all cases of dog bites.
According to the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang, there must be a “liaise with Veterinary Officers in your districts for dog vaccination activities.”
