The ruling government has denied claims made by broadcaster Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart that President Akufo Addo is involved in illegal mining activities.

According to the deputy Minister of Information, Fatima Abubakar, the allegations made by the journalist impugns the character and integrity of the President, and the credibility and commitment of his fight against illegal and irresponsible mining.

In response to the content of the said video, the government said the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo “has never been and is not involved in galamsey.”

“It is, however, imperative to note that the aforementioned action is without prejudice to government’s right to seek legal action against Mr. Smart, Onua TV and Media General,” the statement added.

The statement furthered described the journalistic work of Mr. Smart as “unethical and irresponsible” journalism, adding that “the video is intended to court disaffection for government and undermine efforts to fight illegal mining in the country.”

The government said it was concerned about the spread of disinformation and misinformation, “clothed under the pretext of journalistic discretion and free expression.”

It also affirmed that in spite of the criticism of the government’s fight against the illegal mining, the government commitment remains “unwavering.”

Thus, it asked the general public to disregard the claims of the journalist since its content were false which amounts to malice and has no basis.

The government has since threatened to refer the broadcast journalist in question and its Media firm, Media General to the National Media Commission (NMC).

“It is, however, imperative to note that the aforementioned action is without prejudice to government’s right to seek legal action against Mr. Smart, Onua TV and Media General,” the statement noted.
