The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that effective the end of the first quarter of next year, 2023, children born in Ghana will be issued a National ID card number from birth as it is done in many advanced nations.

This was revealed in a post on his official Twitter account which reads, “As a product of the work, I am happy to announce that from the end of the first quarter of next year, children born in Ghana will be issued a National ID card (Ghana card) number from birth as is done in many advanced nations. 2/2”

This statement results from a meeting he chaired on the integration of the databases of the Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Authority, National Identification Authority and the Ghana Statistical Service, with representatives from these institutions.

The integration of the databases of these institutions forms a part of the initiative to make the Ghana Card an all-purpose card that would single-handedly serve the purposes of the Heath Insurance card and some other identification cards.

This revelation by the Vice President comes as a relief to some Ghanaians as many registrants, till today, still struggle to get their Ghana Card, and believe that this would help curb the issue of the card acquisition.
