Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana has thrown their weight behind the Manhyia District Hospital doctor, whose father verbally abused a nurse at the hospital.

According to the Junior doctors, the doctor at the centre of the Manhyia Dsitrict Hospital incident has done no wrong. The Junior Doctors Association was concerned about the falsehood being peddled that the doctor gave a wrong prescription for which reason the ‘abused’ nurse called for a change.

This comes after a reported dispute between the ‘abused’ nurse and the junior doctor’s father, Alex Opoku-Mensah,  who doubles as the Ashanti Region Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS).

In a viral audio on social media, Mr. Opoku-Mensah is heard throwing insults at and verbally abusing the nurse who had earlier called on her daughter [the doctor] suggest a change in prescription because what the latter prescribed was unavailable at the pharmacy.

Following the incident, the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have called for the dismisal of Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 29, they threatened to lay down their tools if their request is not heeded.

However, the junior doctors believe that the doctor has not erred albeit her father’s reactions.

“While we do not condone the actions of the father, it is imperative to set the records straight on the falsehood being peddled to bring the professional competence of the doctor into disrepute,” said a statement issued.

Jointly signed by President of the Junior Doctors’ Association, Ghana Dr Louisa A. Nkrumah and Secretary Dr Norbert Kipo, the statement said the information put out there about the doctor and her alleged wrong prescription “is untrue, according to the hospital management  and records available”.

“We, therefore, entreat all media houses to pull down their broadcast concerning the alleged wrong prescription of medication and entreat the general public to disregard such allegations against the doctor.”

It insists doctors and nurses have had a cordial working relationship and “we will continue to work as a team to provide quality healthcare to our cherished clients and the people of Ghana at large”.
