The management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) has suspended the Ashanti regional director, Alex Opoku-Mensah with immediate effect.

The suspension was reached at an emergency meeting of the management of the NSS held with Mr Opoku-Mensah on Wednesday, 30 November 2022.

It comes after he was caught on tape verbally abusing a female nurse at the Manhyia Hospital in Kumasi who reportedly had a misunderstanding with a doctor identified as his daughter.

Following this, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association petitioned the National Service Scheme to fire the accused of his post and threatened to withdraw their services if government fails to do so.

However, the suspension according to the NSS is to allow for further probe into the alleged verbal assault on the said nurse who was on duty.

“The management decision is to allow further investigation into the alleged verbal assault on a nurse on duty at the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi,” it said in a statement dated Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Meanwhile, a committee has been set up to investigate the matter where the suspended NSS Director is expected to appear before the committee on Monday, December 5, 2022.
