Illegal gaming affecting Lottery business in the World – Rebecca Paul

President of the World Lottery Association (WLA), Madam Rebecca Paul has said that illegal gaming has become a threat to the lottery business across the globe.

Speaking at the climax of the 60th Anniversary of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) in Accra, Madam Paul said the illegal gaming business is hampering the objectives of lottery bodies honouring their corporate social responsibility through Good Causes.

“The biggest detriment to what is happening is illegal gaming. They don’t contribute to Good Causes, they don’t pay taxes, they don’t follow the same rules all of us do in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility…,” she lamented.

She however assured that the WLA, which NLA headed by Sammi Awuku is a member is “working on how to prevent Illegal gaming across the globe.”

The American who was full of praises for the NLA Boss, Sammi Awuku, for his contribution to the development of lotto business in Ghana added that lottery industry has the potential to invest in several sectors of the economy if illegal gaming is tackled.

Activities of the illegal gamers notwithstanding, Madam Paul said Ninety-Two Billion Dollars ($92 Billion) from lottery proceeds were chanelled into good causes globally in 2021.

“I am happy to tell you that we spent Ninety-Two Billion Dollars in last year alone raised by Lotteries across the globe for Good Causes”, she revealed.

Director-General of the NLA, Sammi Awuku addressing the patrons which included the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, Ga Mantse, Nii Teiko Tsuru II and the President of the African Lotteries Associaton (ALA) said his administration aside sanitizing the lottery business in the country is also committed towards good causes.

The NLA through its ‘Good Causes Foundation’, is determined to develop, implement and maintain an integrated action plan based on four main pillars – education, health, youth and sports development and culture.
