An infant has been dumped in a septic tank in Fahiakobo, a suburb of Bibiani in the Western North region.

The child was rescued from the pit on the afternoon of Sunday, April 23, 2023, by some benevolent residents of the area.

The rescue was occasioned by the distressed child’s cry which drew the attention of a passer-by, according to an eyewitness named Madam Akosua.

“When the news was broken to me, I discounted it, believing it was the kid of a goat which had lost its way into the hole. But when I came to the scene it was true, and I reasoned to contact the authorities,” she told Angel FM’s reporter Bismarck Kofi Gyabaah.

The local chief of the area, Nana Kwesi Addai, who confirmed the report said he and the committee chairperson set out immediately for the scene to verify and rescue the child.

According to him, the septic tank was covered with concrete slabs when the rescuers and observers arrived at the scene, so the men broke it open to make way for its rescue.

“When we found the child, it was a newborn who had been dumped into the hole…Luckily, the toilet was new and unused,” Nana Kwesi Addai added.

The child was thus bathed and covered with cloth before proceeding to the hospital for extra healthcare, but it passed moments after its admission at the Bibiani District Hospital.

The case is currently under police investigation and the culprit is yet to be identified.
