The Regional Maritime University (RMU) is set to commemorate its 65th anniversary on July 28th with a dinner, awards and fundraiser event.

This year holds a double significance as it marks 65 years since Dr Kwame Nkrumah established the institution and the 40th anniversary of its regionalization which brought together 5 countries (Gambia, Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) in the pursuit of maritime excellence.

The event which will be held at the Best Western Beach Hotel in Accra, will serve as a platform to reflect upon the institution’s rich history and celebrate the achievements of the past six and a half decades and the regionalization milestone. Dr Jethro Brooks Jr

The Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, Dr Jethro Brooks Jr in an interview with the media emphasized that the dinner and fundraiser event is being organized to raise money for RMU’s Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students who would not otherwise be able to afford to attend the university.

“The fund has helped to educate many students over the years, and it is a critical part of the RMU’s mission to provide access to quality maritime education to all Ghanaians. Last year, three females benefitted from the initiative and we want more beneficiaries this year.

“The institution places a clarion call to all well-meaning Ghanaians and industry players to assist in raising funds to support the initiative as a means of alleviating the unemployment menace in the country” he added.

He further noted that the event is also been organized to mobilise funds to add more lecture halls to the existing ones, upgrade laboratories and also assist in the operations of the university.

Dr Brooks Jr.  stated that the university has consistently delivered high-quality education and training programs, cultivating a talented pool of graduates who have made remarkable contributions to the maritime industry globally.

He encouraged everyone in and around the sub-region to enrol themselves and their children in the university, implying that “there are companies with offices on the institution’s premises that recruit students even before they graduate.”

The event will bring together distinguished guests including government officials, the Ministers of Transport and Aviation from the five countries [Gambia, Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone], industry leaders, and recognized marine experts.

It will also provide a unique opportunity for attendees to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen collaborative efforts to further advance maritime education and research in the region.
