The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has proposed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to set up registration centres at the various gazetted registration centres throughout the country during the registration of new voters.
The EC announced that the voters’ registration exercise for individuals who have reached the age of 18 will commence on Tuesday, September 12 to Monday, October 2, 2023, and will be conducted at all 268 district offices across the nation.
The Commission at its press briefing in Accra dubbed, ‘Let the Citizen Know’ also said it will charge GHC10 for the replacement of voter’s ID card.
“The voter’s registration exercise will afford Ghanaians who have attained the age of 18 years, since the last registration of 2020 and others who are more than 18 years, but for various reasons couldn’t register during the 2020 registration exercise.
The EC will embark on voter’s registration in all 268 district offices of the Commission. The exercise will be held from September 12 to October 2…,” she said.
But the NPP believes that this arrangement ought to be changed as it will limit the number of persons that would register for the exercise.
Director of Elections of the NPP, Evans Nimako told Angel Morning Show host, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah that this method would aid the registration of more first time voters.
“We have suggested to the EC that it should be able to set up registration centres at the various gazetted registration centres so we can help register more new voters. This should be done in place of the new decision to register voters only at its district offices…,” he said.
