Police officer shot dead in gun battle with suspected robbers

A police officer has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers in a gun battle at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased officer, General Sergeant Ahmed Kamal, lost his life on Monday, 9 October 2023, when the suspected robbers unleased fire on him and one other.

According to an official statement from the police, the incident occurred when the gunmen, who were reportedly preparing to rob a mobile money vendor in Ejura, engaged in a shootout with the police who were attempting to thwart their criminal intentions.

“Two of the officers sustained gunshot wounds in the process and were swiftly transported to the hospital. However, one of the officers, General Sergeant Ahmed Kamal, unfortunately passed on,” the police said.

The police administration extended their condolences to the family of the deceased.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased officer. You paid the ultimate price in the service of your nation, rest well with your maker. May Allah grant you Jannah,” a statement issued by the Police dated Wednesday October 11, said.

The suspects, Alhaji Wahab Suleiman and Ibrahim Abubakari have been apprehended whiles one other accomplice currently on the run.

The two robbers who also sustained gunshot wounds are receiving medical attention under Police protection while efforts are underway to get their accomplice arrested to face justice.

“The police have retrieved several items at the scene, including two SB shotguns, one pump-action gun, six live BB cartridges, and one used BB cartridge,” the statement added.
