The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has denied media reports suggesting that it intends to create 25 new constituencies ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to the electoral body, they only intend to create one constituency, contrary to the reports.

Angelonline.com.gh had on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, published that the EC had begun processes to create 25 new constituencies.

The said Constitutional Instrument titled “Representation of the People (Parliamentary Constituencies) (Amendment) Instrument, 2023,” is expected to be laid before the house by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

This amendment aims to establish 25 additional constituencies, in addition to the existing 275 constituencies in the country, the publication contained.

However, a statement from the Electoral Commission, signed by Micheal Boadu  who is Head of Public Affairs, described the report as false.

It said: “The attention of the Electoral Commission has been drawn to a statement in the media to the effect that 25 New Constituencies are going to be created ahead of the 2024 General Elections.”

“The Commission wishes to state for the information of the General Public that it is only creating One Constituency, which is the Guan Constituency in the Oti Region,” portion of the statement clarifies.

The Commission emphasised and added that they have not “taken any decision on creating constituencies beyond that of the Guan.”

The statement furthered and urged the general public to disregard the said statement.
