Ghana’s rep in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League, Medeama, has humbly appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fulfil his financial promise made to the club in the competition.

The President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, had pledged GHS 1 million to the Ghanaian champions prior to their Africa journey after winning the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

He made the promised when Medeama SC paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House at which meeting they presented the GPL title to him and formally informed him of their participation in the competition.

Akufo-Addo while congratulating the ‘Yellow and Mauve’ for the feat achieved, pledged to cushion them to ensure that they raise the flag of Ghana high in the continent’s inter club competition.

Medeama fast-forward defied all odds against Nigeria’s Remo Stars and Horoya AC of Guinea in the preliminary rounds to secure a group stage qualification where they have been paired with Yanga FC, CR Belouizdad and Al Ahly.

With the group stage matches of the competition slated for later this month, the Tarkwa-based club commences their campaign with a trip Cairo to face 11-time champions Al Ahly.

Building up to the all-important crucial tie in Egypt, Brand and Marketing Manager of Medeama SC – Ebenezer Aidoo pleaded on the president the need to commit his promise.

“We want to thank the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for their support since our campaign in Africa because it has been good. But again, we want to appeal to President Akufo Addo that he promised to offer us Ghc1m when we visited him, and we are pleading that he walk the talk,” he said while speaking to Accra-based Asempa FM.

He added “We are appealing to the Sports Ministry to ensure we get the money because we need it to prepare for our upcoming games. Our travelling expenses and all the arrangements we are putting in place are costing us a lot, and so we are appealing to President Akufo Addo to fulfil his promise to us because we need money to compete and compete well in the CAF Champions League.”
