Nkwanta South death toll rises to 8, curfew imposed

The number of persons killed in the conflict in Nkwanta South in the Oti Region has risen to eight.

The armed assailants opened fire on residents at the Nkwanta Central Market Monday morning, according to reports.

Several properties have been destroyed and residents have fled for safety leaving behind a ghost town.

A police officer and five others are in critical condition after suffering bullet wounds in the shootout.

The clashes follow contention about a Yam Festival being organised by the Akyode people in the Nkwanta town had led to fresh skirmishes.

Angel News’ Correspondent, Ama Caleb Ali reports that personnel from the military, police and National Investigations Bureau (NI) and Immigrations and other state security agencies have taken over the situation.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery has announced the immediate imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew on the area.

The Minister in a statement further bans all persons from carrying arms within communities where the curfew has been imposed.
