‘I was wrongly accused but God cleared me’ – Freed coup plotter

One of the three persons who was acquitted of the charge of high treason by the High Court in Accra, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, has said that he was wrongly accused by the prosecution in the trial that lasted four years.

The military man who hails from Walewale in the North East Region but was born and raised in Jamasi in the Ashanti Region said he knew from the very day the charges were brought against him that God will intervene in the situation.

“I was accused wrongly and prayed to God he should let the truth prevail and indeed the truth prevailed…,” he told Angel Morning Show host, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

The junior military officer and two others including Assistant Commissioner of Police, Benjamin Agordzo, and Colonel Gameli were acquitted.

The six persons including three soldiers – Donya Kafui, aka Ezor (a blacksmith) and Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager), were found guilty of conspiracy to commit treason and treason, while Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces) was found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.

The three soldiers – Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.

Asked how he was arrested and accused of being part of the coup plotters, he said “I went somewhere with a colleague and we happened to pass by where the meeting was taking place…but I was never a part of it….”

To him, being set free after four years of committal proceedings was a ‘mix feeling’.

“It’s a mix feeling, it was both a sad incident and joyful as well…but I pray that God will touch the heart of the government so he can go back and re-look at the cases of the persons sentenced…,” he appealed.
