A tragic fire outbreak in Axim, located in the Nzema East Municipality of Ghana’s Western Region, has claimed the lives of an entire family of six.

The incident, which occurred around midnight, engulfed their home, leaving the community in mourning and raising concerns about fire safety and emergency response.

The fire reportedly started while the family was asleep. The father, who sustained severe burns, shared his harrowing experience before succumbing to his injuries.

Speaking from his hospital bed, he said:

“I heard a sound that I thought was thunder but suddenly everywhere became dark and full of smoke. I managed to rescue my wife and one child, but my other three children had already been burnt to death. I rushed out, shouting for help, but it was too late.”

The father, mother, and their youngest child, who were rescued with severe burns, were rushed to the Axim Government Hospital. According to medical staff, their conditions were critical. The hospital later recommended transferring the victims to an advanced facility in Accra, but doctors expressed concerns about their ability to survive the journey by ambulance.

In response to the crisis, Hon. Catherine Ablema Afeku, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, stepped in and arranged for a helicopter evacuation.

Tragically, reports from the hospital indicated that the three victims succumbed to their injuries before the helicopter could arrive, bringing the death toll to six.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary reports describe the blaze as fast-spreading and overwhelming. Neighbors and witnesses who attempted to intervene were unable to contain the flames.

The Axim community is in shock, with residents mourning the devastating loss. Many are calling for better fire safety education, improved healthcare infrastructure, and more effective emergency response measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
