In recent weeks, Ghana has been grappling with an increase in power outages, sparking fears of a return to the dark days of ‘dumsor’.

However, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has moved to allay these concerns, asserting that the current situation does not warrant the implementation of a load shedding timetable.

Laila Abubakar, External Communications Manager at ECG, addressed the public’s anxieties, emphasising that the ongoing power outages differ significantly from the systematic load shedding experienced in previous years.

Abubakar shed light on the complex nature of the outages, attributing them to various factors beyond mere load shedding. She assured Ghanaians that the ECG is diligently working to address these issues and restore stable power supply across the nation.

“The occurrence of power outages does not necessarily equate to load shedding, as there are multifaceted factors at play. We are committed to resolving the challenges within our control,” stated Abubakar.

In response to queries regarding the possibility of ‘dumsor’ returning, Abubakar clarified, “There aren’t any issues with shedding load. The load shed, I think is what people understand by ‘dumsor’. But usually, when someone asks me if, there is ‘dumsor,’ I ask them what do you understand and what do you think ‘dumsor’ means. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t be a timetable,” she insisted.

However, the Minority in parliament has voiced dissenting views, disputing the notion that ‘dumsor’ is not rearing its head once again. They argue that the government’s inability to generate adequate power to meet demand is the root cause of the current power disruptions.
