The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday, March 24, 2024, beat their Ghanaian counterparts 2:1 in an International friendly match at the Stade de Marrakech in Marrakech Morocco.

The rivalry between the two West African football powerhouses commonly known as ‘Jollof Derby’ reignited and rekindled memories of the two encounters.

Nigeria who had a brighter start of the game took the lead in the 38th minutes courtesy of a Cyriel Dessers spot-kick before going into recess.

Ademola Lookman doubled the lead for the Nigerians in the 84th minute after he received a pass in the penalty box and beat goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to make the score 2-0.

Ghana’s intensity of their game in search for a consolation finally paid off in added-on time when Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was fouled in the penalty area.

Jordan Ayew who captained the side on the day cooly and calmly converted the penalty kick reducing the deficit for coach Otto Addo’s men.

The game ended 2-1 in favor of the Nigerians who won the bragging right in what was the 20th meeting between both sides.

Before this match, Nigeria had won seven times while Ghana also recorded five wins with seven ending in a draw in their last 19 meetings over the past 40 years.

The competitive but friendly game served as preparation grounds for both countries ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa qualifying campaign in the first week of June.
