Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw, former Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, has accused the ruling NPP government of being the main importers of frozen chicken into the country, leading to the neglect and decline of the local poultry industry.

Speaking at a seminar organized by the Ghana National Poultry Farmers Association, themed “Overview of Ghana’s Depressing Poultry Industry and its Impact on Future Food Security,” Dr. Bisiw, who also serves as the National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlighted the dire state of the poultry sector. She alleged that the current administration’s involvement in the importation of frozen chicken has left the industry on life support.

“The NPP government has notoriously abandoned the poultry industry, causing it to sink and be on the verge of collapse. This essential sector was deemed crucial for the economy under the former NDC administration but has been severely neglected by the current government. The NDC is committed to reviving the industry when we come into power, God willing, in 2025,” Dr. Bisiw stated.

The seminar, which aimed to discuss the survival and development of the poultry industry, also served as a platform for the NDC leadership to share its plans for the poultry industry as contained in its manifesto ahead of the 2024 general election.

Mr. Victor Oppong Agyei, the National Chairman of the Ghana National Poultry Farmers Association, also addressed the seminar, urging the government to implement strict regulations on the importation of frozen chicken. He emphasized the need for protective measures to support and sustain the local poultry industry.

The seminar underscored the critical challenges facing the poultry industry in Ghana and highlighted the importance of governmental intervention and support to ensure its future viability and contribution to food security.
