National Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Remi Edmondson, has reiterated the party’s call to separate the roles of the Attorney General from that of the Minister for Justice.
In an interview on the Joy News’ AM Show, Edmondson announced that the PPP will be issuing a press release this morning to react to the Attorney General’s involvement in the ambulance procurement issue with Mr. Richard Jakpa.
“We want to reiterate something we’ve emphasized since the party was formed 12 years ago, it is necessary to decouple the positions of the Attorney General from that of the Minister for Justice.
“Currently, the NPP has politicized this role, making it highly partisan,” he said.
He noted that the Attorney General has declared he will not resign, with key members supporting his stance and claiming his innocence despite the lack of a thorough investigation.
“This situation has become highly partisan, and we believe that making the Attorney General’s position independent, as some have also suggested for the presidency, would help avoid such issues,” Edmondson explained.
Edmondson emphasized that political interference complicates these matters, resulting in unresolved issues when power shifts between the NPP and NDC.
“We urge Ghanaians to continue raising these concerns. Let’s discuss this matter properly and ensure fairness. Confidence in the judiciary must be restored for all Ghanaians. The current system, where the president appoints the Attorney General, hampers efforts to combat corruption, especially when government officials are involved.”
He therefore called for a national discussion on the issue to enhance judicial independence and fairness in the fight against corruption.
