Senior Communications Team Member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has alleged that Hubtel Ghana, an indigenous tech company, controls the account of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He alleged that the tech company is owned by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia hence the third-party ownership of the ECG finances.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, he accused Hubtel Ghana of having indirect control of the electricity bills paid by Ghanaians.

“You know something, we must ask the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana why they increased their tariffs. While we are paying these bills, the monies go directly into the account of a company called Hubtel Ghana – owned by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

So, managers of Hubtel Ghana directly control the monies paid to them under the pretext of ECG account by customers,” Solomon Owusu said in his allegations.

He  noted that “After this, the ECG and Hubtel sit down and shared the percentage among the two parties.”

Mr. Owusu believes the third-party account management of the ECG is the reason for the continuous hike in electricity tariffs paid by customers of the power company.
