Activists launch 3-day protest in Accra to free arrested anti-galamsey demonstrators
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A pressure group calling itself, under the Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey has begun a three-day protest in Accra, Ghana, to demand action against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.”

The protesters started their march from Shiashie, near the University of Ghana stadium holding signs with messages such as “Stop Galamsey Now,” “Corruption Buries Our Future,” and “Greed Destroys Nations.”

The group is also advocating for the release of 53 individuals arrested during a previous protest related to the same issue.

The march, which will pass through key areas of the city like Okponglo, Kawukudi Junction, and eventually reach Parliament, is meant to raise awareness about the devastating environmental impact of illegal mining.

Rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim have been particularly affected. In addition to today’s protest, the demonstrators plan to present petitions to Parliament and the Lands Commission.

The protest is receiving significant attention due to the critical environmental concerns and the broader public outcry over corruption and the destruction of natural resources in Ghana.

The police are actively working to protect the protesters, and ambulances are on standby to handle any emergencies.
