The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for canceling road projects initiated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration in 2016, calling it discriminatory.

According to John Mahama, upon assuming office, the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, halted the construction of roads awarded under the Cocoa Roads project, claiming it was auditing the contracts.

John Mahama promised the people of Amoma in the Kintampo South constituency that his next administration will not cancel any road construction currently being undertaken by the NPP administration.

He further explained that the Amoma road was initially contracted as a cocoa road, however, the incumbent regime canceled it, citing that the people of Amoma do not farm cocoa.

Mahama pointed out that the community farms cashew instead, emphasizing that canceling the road contract was detrimental to their development.

“In 2020, I remember the Amoma road project. When we were in power, we allocated it under the Cocoa Roads initiative, with a contractor working from Amoma to Akyena. The new government then said Amoma doesn’t produce cocoa, so why did we bring Cocoa Roads to Amoma?”

In response, the former president said, “Even if we don’t produce cocoa, we produce cashew. Don’t we export cashew and bring dollars to the country?”

The government has since resumed work on the road, recognizing the approaching election.

He assured the people that the NDC will complete these roads for them if elected president on January 7.
