Divine Nkrumah, Director of Operations for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has called for a complete overhaul of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show hosted by Ama Brako Ampofo on October 2, 2024, Nkrumah attributed the nation’s persistent electricity issues to what he described as inefficiency within the ECG workforce.

He accused the staff of drawing salaries without performing their duties effectively, which he said contributes to the ongoing energy crisis.

Nkrumah also raised concerns about ECG’s recent practice of changing electricity meters without refunding previous balances to consumers.

He noted that while customers could theoretically reclaim their money, the process is overly cumbersome, discouraging many from doing so.

Former La-Dadekotopon MP, Nii Amasah Namoale, corroborated Nkrumah’s remarks by recounting his own experience, where he lost his prepaid balance after a meter swap. Although he received a token to recharge his new meter, he questioned how many Ghanaians could endure the lengthy process to retrieve their funds.

To improve efficiency, Nkrumah urged the government to dismiss all current ECG staff and replace them with a new, skilled workforce that can offer better service to the public.
