MTN has invested GHC 106.5m in social impact projects to improve lives of Ghanaians – Adwoa Wiafe

Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana has invested a total of GHC 106.5m in social impact projects through its Corporate Social Responsibility vehicle, MTN Foundation, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, has said.

The amount, Ms Wiafe said at the company’s media engagement in Accra to update the media on MTN’s operations and initiatives has been invested in various areas of Ghanaian society. This has directly and indirectly impacted the lives of some 4.5 million Ghanaians.

The MTN Ghana Foundation which is the single purpose vehicle to drive all MTN’s CSR initiatives in the country was established in 2007. The Foundation currently has three focus areas – Health, Education and Economic Empowerment

“A 166 social projects which include 90 educational projects, 55 health care projects, 15 economic empowerment projects and six community support initiatives have so far been completed…,” she said.

According to Ms Wiafe, the 90 education projects include ICT centers and libraries, classrooms and dormitories as well as scholarships granted to Ghanaians at various levels of the educational ladder. The construction and renovation of hospitals and health centers and provision of medical equipment to several hospitals are the components of the company’s investments in the healthcare sector of the country.

MTN Ghana as part of its efforts to improving business in the country has also invested in micro enterprises, assisted youth development initiatives in Suhum and Nsawam and supported women empowerment projects in Shea Butter and Oil Palm as well.

The introduction of Innovations Fund, KNUST Telecoms Funding, ICT Incubation and Ghana Multimedia Incubator form part of MTN Ghana’s Economic Empowerment Initiatives executed to improve innovations in Ghana.

MTN Foundation, she added, has through its community support initiatives provided support for ‘Trokosi’ girls in vocational training, awarded scholarships for 100 students at educational institutions distributes hampers to babies on 25th December each year.

These investments notwithstanding, Ms Wiafe promised that the company will continue to do more to touch the lives of Ghanaians through the MTN Foundation.
