Bawumia announces launch of local streaming platform to revolutionize royalties for creatives

Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that Ghana will launch its first local music streaming platform in November.

Addressing stakeholders in the creative arts sector, Dr Bawumia emphasized the need for a homegrown solution to help Ghanaian musicians reap better financial rewards from their work.

“Spotify and other platforms are externally owned, so it’s not surprising that the payments to our musicians are very little,” he said, stressing that current platforms don’t provide substantial returns for artists in Ghana.

“The issue for us has been to ensure we have a local streaming platform where we can put all the catalogues from A to Z that we can find in Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the collaborative effort between MUSIGA, the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), music producers, and the private sector to make this platform a reality.

He explained that the platform is designed to help manage revenue, track royalties, and maximize opportunities for content creators.

“I’m very happy to let you know that the work has been completed,” Dr. Bawumia shared with enthusiasm.
