Telecommunication giant, MTN has revealed that approximately 40 kilometers of its cables have been damaged due to the ongoing Takoradi-Agona road construction.
Teddy Hayford-Acquah, Head of Technical for the Central and Western regions, disclosed this during MTN’s media and stakeholders forum in Takoradi.
The telecommunications company expressed concerns about the potential impact on service delivery in the affected areas. They emphasized that the damage could lead to disruptions in connectivity and delays in restoring services to customers. MTN called for greater collaboration between construction firms and utility providers to prevent such issues in the future.
Hayford-Acquah also mentioned that MTN spent 5 million cedis in a single week to repair the damage and relocate the cables to a safer area. He reiterated the need for close coordination between construction companies and utility providers during road projects to avoid further damage.
In an interview with our reporter Nana Fynn, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief of Corporate Services and Sustainability, said MTN is working hard to improve customer service.
She highlighted the company’s heavy focus on enhancing the customer experience this year through extensive network upgrades.
“We have upgraded to more modern and efficient equipment, replacing older infrastructure to improve network performance. These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to delivering a better quality of service,” Wiafe said.
On the customer service side, MTN has streamlined its processes, moved towards more self-service options, and improved service delivery times.
“We’ve taken a holistic approach to enhance the customer experience, and we believe customers are already seeing the benefits of these improvements,” she added.
Regarding sustainability, Wiafe outlined MTN’s framework built on four key pillars, with a particular focus on climate action and reducing the company’s carbon footprint. MTN is transitioning its data centers to solar power, and where immediate solar conversion isn’t possible, they are using more energy-efficient equipment.
In their offices, they are also converting to energy-efficient appliances to minimize energy consumption. MTN’s long-term goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and they are steadily progressing toward this target.
The company’s sustainability efforts also extend to societal contributions and governance practices, all aimed at supporting socio-economic development in the country.
