2024 election: Suhum NPP MP clarifies withdrawal as independent candidate

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Suhum constituency, Oboafo Kwadwo Asante has dismissed claims of rescinding his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 election.

Mr Asante said he remains committed and is ready to serve his constituents.

“I’m contesting as an independent candidate. I have not said anywhere that I’ve rescinded my decision to contest as an independent candidate. I don’t even know where that thing came from.

“I received a lot of calls from Suhum and I had to rush back to the people to continue with my door to door [campaign]. It is part of the normal way of doing things but it is not true that I’m not contesting again,” he said in an interview in Accra-based Onua TV.

The clarification comes barely 24 hours after the NPP caucus in Parliament said it is actively working to reconcile with its MPs who are going independent.

Oboafo Asante on September 2, 2024, declared his intention to contest as an independent candidate after his defeat in the NPP parliamentary primary on January 28, 2024.

The incumbent, who was seeking a second term in office, lost the bid to Frank Aseidu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, who garnered 496 votes against his 320.

Tension is currently brewing in Parliament as his seat and three others have been declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin under Article 97 of the Constitution, citing cross-carpeting.

The other seats affected are those of Andrew Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Agona West MP, Cynthia Morrison and Peter Kwakye-Ackah, MP for Amenfi Central from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
