The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially announced its decision to withdraw from the upcoming December 7, 2024, Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
The decision, as outlined in a letter to the Electoral Commission of Ghana, was made by the National Executive Committee (NEC) in consultation with the family of the party’s late founder and presidential candidate, Madam Akua Donkor.
The NEC stated that the withdrawal is intended to honor the legacy and sacrifices of Madam Donkor, who was the sole candidate representing the party.
“This decision, irrespective of how difficult it may be, has been reached to posthumously honour the commitment and sacrifices by our late Founder and Presidential Candidate as the only person to send her candidature to grave,” the letter read.
The GFP expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to the Electoral Commission and its election calendar due to their decision.
The party emphasized its intention to participate in future elections organized by the Commission.
Signed by National Organizer Richard Botchway on behalf of the NEC, the letter officially informed the Commission of the party’s intent not to participate in this year’s elections, stating, “Count on your usual co-operations.”
