The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Steering Committee has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Ghana Police Service, accusing them of a “lackadaisical” response to growing incidents of lawlessness and violence following the 2024 general elections.

In a press statement issued after an emergency meeting on Tuesday, December 10, the committee expressed concern over escalating acts of vandalism, intimidation, and property destruction allegedly carried out by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NPP alleged that their parliamentary candidates and several Electoral Commission (EC) officials were held at gunpoint at various collation centers, including Fanteakwa North, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Techiman South, and Aowin constituencies. According to the NPP, these individuals were forced to declare results in favor of the NDC under duress.

The party also accused NDC supporters of looting, burning, and destroying both public properties and assets belonging to NPP parliamentary candidates.

“This is unacceptable! This is lawlessness!” the statement declared.

The NPP leadership expressed deep concern over the police’s inaction in these incidents, particularly criticizing the Ghana Police Service for its failure to take decisive action against the violence.

“We are particularly disappointed in the leadership of the Police Service for its lackadaisical handling of the unfolding lawlessness,” the statement read.

The NPP urged the police to take swift action and ensure that those responsible for the violent acts are held accountable. The party also called on the public and civil society to join in condemning the violence, which it believes poses a threat to the country’s democracy and national security.

Despite their dissatisfaction with the electoral outcome, the NPP appealed for calm among its members and supporters, urging them to avoid retaliatory actions.

The Steering Committee encouraged party members to voice their concerns through appropriate channels as the party begins efforts to regroup, reorganize, and strategize for future elections.

The NPP emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged the NDC to publicly condemn the acts of vandalism and violence committed by its supporters.

“This is definitely not the change Ghanaians voted for,” the statement concluded.
