UEW celebrates its 29th congregation

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held the first session of its 29th congregation from Monday, December 16 to December 21, 2024.

The ceremony, which took place at the Josephus Anamuah Mensah Hall, saw a total of 9,575 students graduate from the school. Of these, 250 students representing (2.6%) were awarded diplomas, 8,371 students representing (87.4%) were awarded first degrees, and 954 students representing (9.9%) were awarded postgraduate degrees.

812 students representing (9.7%) graduated with First Class honours, while 2,775 students representing (33.2%) earned Second Class Upper honours.

Additionally, 2,949 students representing (35.2%) received Second Class Lower honours, 1,505 students representing (18.0%) graduated with Third Class honours, and 330 students representing (3.9%) obtained a pass.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Jobson Mitchual, praised the graduates for their hard work and dedication in his address.

“Today is no ordinary day; graduates, you are not just passing the class of 2024; you are part of history, history of excellence, resilience, and the pursuit of transformational change. Your journey enriches the fabric of our great university,” he said.

Professor Mitchual stated that the ceremony is not an end in itself but a means to an end. He pointed out that the ceremony marks the launch of a new adventure, new challenges, and new opportunities to make a difference in the community and beyond.

“Let us pause for a moment to appreciate the journey we have all shared and look forward with hope and excitement to what lies ahead of us,” he explained.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the students have not only acquired knowledge but have also developed skills and values that will guide them as they step into the world beyond.

He emphasised that the ceremony reflects resilience, passion, and a commitment to pursue excellence.

He then congratulated students who balanced their academic work with full-time jobs. “A special congratulations go to students who balanced their studies with full-time jobs; your future is bright, and we cannot wait to see all your accomplishments,” he emphasised.

The ceremony featured the awarding of degrees, the presentation of special awards, and the traditional procession of graduates. Family and friends of the graduates were in attendance to celebrate their loved ones’ achievements.

Enoch Enyan, the best graduating student from the School of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Education, Winneba, with a total Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.96, stated in his speech that he nearly quit school due to financial challenges, but he believes that with God, all things are possible.

According to the valedictorian, he is deeply honoured to represent the achievements of his fellow course mates who have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone. “As I stand before you today, I am filled with a sense of both humility and pride,” he stated.

The valedictorian further encouraged everyone to set goals and strive to achieve them, asserting that with determination, victory will surely prevail. “Set goals and strive to achieve them, and with determination and God on your side, you shall surely be victorious,” he opined.
