In an address to the African Union, President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that Africa’s future hinges on the potential of its youth, with over 60% of the continent’s population under the age of 25.

He called for the creation of institutional frameworks that empower young people and women to take on leadership roles at all levels of governance, ensuring their voices are heard in policymaking processes.

Speaking at a high-level summit on AU institutional reforms in Nairobi, President Mahama stressed the critical need for the African Union to empower underrepresented groups.

He also cited his legacy of appointing Ghana’s first female Vice President as a testament to his commitment to inclusive leadership.

“Africa’s future lies in its youth, and over 60% of our population is under the age of 25,” Mahama said.
“Yet, their voices are largely absent in policymaking. We must institutionalize frameworks that empower our young people and women to lead at all levels of governance.”

President Mahama further stated that the energy, creativity, and vision of the youth are the driving forces behind the Africa they all seek to build.

He also stated that the African Continental Free Trade Area has laid the foundation for a single African market, but much work remains to be done.
