The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has stated that football, which is meant for entertainment, should not serve as a platform for losing precious lives in Ghana.
Speaking on the tragic incident that has shaken Ghanaian football following the death of an Asante Kotoko fan during a Premier League game, Dr. Akuffo Dampare emphasized that no more lives should be lost over a game.

He made this statement on Tuesday, January 4, 2025, during a meeting with the management of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at their secretariat in Kumasi.

“We cannot allow another life to be lost over a game meant for entertainment. Football, especially at the national level, has the power to bring us together. Even at the local level, it fosters unity,” the IGP stressed, highlighting that football should be seen as more than just competition.

He urged Ghanaians to view football as a unifying force that strengthens community bonds rather than creates division.
“So let us approach football for what it truly represents, a game to be enjoyed, a game to unite us, and a game that enriches our humanity,” he added.
Dr. Akuffo Dampare reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s unwavering support and commitment to investigating the tragedy and ensuring that the culprits face the full rigors of the law.
