Ramadan: I pay others to fast for me – Bukom Banku

Former Ghanaian boxer, Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has disclosed his inability to fast during Ramadan, a sacred month observed by Muslims globally.

According to Bukom Banku, his refusal to observe the month-long fasting period despite being a Muslim is due to his fondness for food.

Muslims around the world observe Ramadan, a significant period in the Islamic faith marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, and spiritual reflection, but, those who cannot fulfill the observation exempt themselves.

Speaking on Accra-based Max TV, Bukom Banku stated that he is no exception to those who do not partake in Ramadan, as he pays fellow Muslims to fast on his behalf and pray for him.

He emphasized that his rationale stems from his inability to live without food, noting that eating has become habitual for him from the moment he wakes up.

“I am a Muslim, but I have told Ghanaians that I cannot fast. So, I give people money to fast on my behalf and pray for me.

“When I wake up in the morning and I have not eaten, I don’t like it. It gives me stomach consciousness. I eat early in the morning, afternoon, evening, and later at night,” he said on Monday, March 31, 2025.

The turned musician and comic actor, added, “I know myself better than anyone else.”

When Bukom Banku was asked whether his practice aligned with the teachings of the Quran, he quickly interjected, “Yes,” and defended that Islamic teachings permit it.

He argued that National Chief Imam Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, along with members of his community, has been aware of his practice for years.

The former WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion stressed that despite this, his commitment and respect for the values of Ramadan remain unquestionable.

Bukom Banku described the year’s Ramadan period successfully and acknowledged the efforts of all who partook.

“This year’s fasting was successful. Those who embarked on it really did well,” acknowledged Bukom Banku.
