A member of the National Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, says that the mechanism for finding a lasting solution in Bawku township and its environs in the Upper East Region should go beyond police involvement.
She noted that the deployment of police to the area to restore peace has proven futile over the years, and that the best option for handling the security situation is the involvement of the military.
Adding her voice to the recent Bawku conflicts, which have led to the killing of some police officers, she stated that the military must be made to replace the police while declaring the area a war zone.
“If you ask me, I will tell you that at this point, the police administration should withdraw all their men from Bawku, declare the area a war zone, and deploy the military to take over,” she said on Monday, April 14, 2025, on the Angel Morning Show (AMS).
According to Madam Daaku, her proposal stemmed from what she described as the utterances of the youth of Bawku, which indicate their unwillingness to lay down their tools and allow peace to reign.
“Because whatever has come over the youth there cannot be fathomed. If you had the privilege of hearing some of the comments made by these people… you could see and hear even women among these young people advocating that the police be withdrawn from Bawku so that they are left with the people of Mamprusi alone and match them boot for boot.
It is all over social media. At first, when there were conflicts, it was the women who smoked peace for resolutions, but now, the women are involved,” the NPP communicator noted.
