Ghana confirms intention to host new ECOWAS health office

The Ministry of Health received received a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), during a courtesy visit to further discuss Ghana’s potential role as host of a new West African Health Organisation (WAHO) office.

The meeting focused on WAHO’s strategic vision for regional health integration and highlighted Ghana’s potential to play a pivotal role in advancing that mission. The proposal to host a WAHO office in Ghana was a key focus.

Both parties acknowledged the significant benefits such an office would bring, including enhanced coordination of health programs, strengthened response to public health emergencies, and increased opportunities for technical cooperation across the region.

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed deep appreciation for WAHO’s ongoing commitment to strengthening regional health systems and fostering collaboration among ECOWAS member states.

Mr. Akandoh reiterated Ghana’s strong track record in public health leadership, medical research, and health infrastructure development, emphasizing the country’s readiness and willingness to support WAHO’s objectives.

“Hosting a WAHO office would not only strengthen our partnership but also reinforce Ghana’s position as a hub for health innovation and coordination in West Africa,” he stated.

The ECOWAS assessment team lead commended Ghana’s proactive role in regional health initiatives and praised the Ministry’s openness to partnership.

The minister stressed the ministry’s commitment to working closely with regional and international partners to improve health outcomes and to build resilient, sustainable healthcare systems across the West African ssub-region.
