Removal of TTH CEO: GMA condemns action by Health Minister, demands apology

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has denounced dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), by Ministry of Health.

GMA described the development as abuse of power and breach of due process by sector minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Dr. Atiku’s removal followed impromptu visit by the Minister to the facility on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, after death of patient Bavug Salim, who reportedly died due to lack of a working ventilator.

In statement released on April 23, GMA condemned both the dismissal and confrontational treatment of medical staff during the visit.

According to the association, the Minister’s actions constitute a clear violation of natural justice, insisting that standard administrative procedures were disregarded.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated.

“The dismissal of the TTH CEO and the treatment of medical staff during the visit constitute an affront to due process and an abuse of authority,” the GMA stated.

In addition, GMA demanded an unqualified apology from the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, for the unwarranted attack on staff involved.

It added, “We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who faced unjust treatment.”

GMA also called on management of the facility to ensure that due process of investigation is carried out to ascertain the facts surrounding the patient’s death.

“The GMA calls on the hospital to ensure due process is followed to ascertain the true facts about the grievances of the affected family and find lasting solutions to the issues.”
