From guarding the goalposts to earning Hyundai Elantra key – Hearts of Oak celebrates Benjamin Asare

Must Read

As we celebrate the incredible success of those who inspire us every day, whose achievements continue to light the way for many, Accra Hearts of Oak, in that same spirit, has celebrated an icon of the club who continues to raise its flag both locally and internationally.

Benjamin Asare, Accra Hearts of Oak’s captain and number one goalkeeper, has delivered outstanding performances in the ongoing 2024/25 Ghanaian football season, earning him a call-up to the Black Stars. So far, he has recorded 15 clean sheets in 24 matches.

Beyond the call-up, he became the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers double-header against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, keeping clean sheets in both matches.

Ghanaians quickly praised him for his performance. Coach Otto Addo, in an interview, confirmed Asare as his first-choice goalkeeper for the national team.

While enjoying his moment after the Black Stars experience, Benjamin Asare faced mixed reactions when a video of him on a public “trotro” went viral on social media. Some netizens criticized the act, claiming it was unbefitting of a senior national team player.

However, others applauded him for staying grounded and refusing to adopt a lavish lifestyle despite his success.

Amid the controversy, Radio XYZ political show host and Power FM General Manager Mugabe Maase weighed in, hinting that the player would receive a new vehicle in the coming months.

Barely three months later, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, prominent businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo, CEO of Class Media Group, donated a car to the Hearts of Oak star. Asare, who received his first Black Stars call-up in his 30s, was presented with a blue Hyundai Elantra at the club’s Commercial Center in Accra.

Hearts of Oak took to social media to celebrate their talisman, stating that his performance extended beyond the pitch.

They wrote, “Good leadership rewarded,” adding, “Our captain Benjamin Asare has driven performance on and off the pitch, now he’s driving home in style.”

Further congratulating their skipper, the Ghana Premier League giants described the donation as a “well-deserved gift” for a player whose humility and determination continue to inspire.

From guarding the goalposts to earning the keys, for club, country, and badge, Asare’s leadership has been rightfully recognized.

His story, one of a focused footballer who never compromised on hard work both on and off the pitch, serves as a powerful motivation for current and aspiring footballers chasing their dreams.
