We’ll create problems if Chairman Wontumi is not released – NPP MP

Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, wants Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to release the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, to prevent unrest in the country.

He made this statement at the forecourt of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) headquarters on Friday, May 30, 2025, where NPP supporters gathered in a quest for the release of Chairman Wontumi, who faces charges related to illegal mining, fraud, and money laundering.

“If he is not released, we will deal with Ghana; we will create problems in Ghana,” he threatened.

Baafi explained that the constitution enshrines fundamental human rights, which stipulate that a person must not be kept in custody for more than 48 hours. However, he noted that the excessive bail condition has made it exceedingly difficult for them to secure Wontumi’s release.

“When a person is arrested, he or she should not be kept in custody for more than 48 hours; it is either the person is granted bail with sureties or is processed for court. Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has been given an unreasonably high bail condition worth Gh₵50 million, which has become very difficult to pay.

“We have come here in peace; Wontumi has committed a crime, reduce the bail condition so that we can bail him. He has work to attend to, a house, a family, and he is also a member of a party, so there is no way he is going to run away; release him and stop creating unnecessary tension and embarrassment in the country,” he stated.

He added: “The fact that you are in power does not mean you can abuse the law. Ghanaians voted you into power, and we have all agreed to operate in accordance with the constitution. You cannot punish Wontumi out of hatred; the country is governed by laws.”
