Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups attempting to incite violence under the cover of chieftaincy disputes, stating that the government will take firm action against anyone who threatens national peace and security.

According to the minister, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) continues to protect the country’s territorial integrity through coordinated land, maritime, and air operations.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Presidency on Monday, July 21, 2025, he said Ghana’s overall security is stable, but places like Bawku and Alavanyo, including nearby areas, remain volatile.

“The Ghana Armed Forces are actively monitoring developments in these areas and have put in place robust mechanisms to swiftly contain any potential escalation,” Dr. Omane Boamah said.

“In doing so, we shall always separate crime from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflicts.”

He emphasized that the government remains committed to promoting peaceful and lasting resolutions through dialogue while upholding law and order.

As part of efforts to respond to emerging security threats such as violent extremism, terrorism, and other transnational crimes, Dr. Omane Boamah revealed that the Ghana Army recently participated in a multi-national military exercise aimed at boosting the capacity of troops from across the region.

The Ghana Army, in collaboration with the United States Army, the Southern European Task Force – Africa (SETAF), and the Special Operations Command – Africa (SOCAF), successfully conducted Exercise AFRICAN LION and Exercise FLINTLOCK in May 2025.

Exercise AFRICAN LION was held across Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco, and Senegal, while Exercise FLINTLOCK took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. A total of 94 Ghanaian troops participated in the exercises hosted in Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, and Morocco.

“These joint military exercises are critical to enhancing the readiness of our forces and strengthening regional cooperation in dealing with evolving threats,” the minister noted.

Dr. Omane Boamah reiterated the government’s determination to ensure peace, stability, and security across the country, warning that any attempts to destabilize communities under the guise of tradition will be met with lawful force.
