The Ghana Prisons Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to recruit 5,000 young people as Prisons Assistants across the country.

This initiative, dubbed “Youth in Prisons Service Assistance,” aims to provide a platform for collaboration between the Ghana Prisons Service and YEA to tackle youth unemployment and enhance the capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service.

Under the agreement, YEA will finance the cost of training for all beneficiaries engaged and provide monthly stipends throughout the programme.

The Ghana Prisons Service will develop the curriculum for the training, train the beneficiaries, and deploy them across the country.

It is also expected that a Programme Management Committee comprising designated representatives from both institutions will oversee the coordination and operational management of the programme.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, expressed gratitude to the President for this policy aimed at addressing unemployment in the country.

He emphasised that the government is committed to walking the talk and hopes that the programme will be implemented as expected, going a long way in addressing the unemployment situation in the country.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to address youth unemployment, as seen in similar partnerships between YEA and other institutions, such as the Ghana Police Service and Ghana National Fire Service.

The programme is expected to provide employment opportunities for young Ghanaians while supporting the Ghana Prisons Service in its mandate.

The Ghana Prisons Service and YEA aim to enhance the operational capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service and contribute to maintaining peace and security in the country.
