The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially named Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

This announcement follows the findings of a Special Committee constituted by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to determine the necessity of holding primaries to select a candidate for the by-election.

Addressing the media on Monday, July 28, 2025, the chairman of the Special Committee and Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Jeff Konadu, disclosed that the committee had settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive Officer of Owoo Mining Company, as the most suitable candidate.

“Today marks the official announcement of Solomon Kwame Asumadu as our candidate for the Akwatia Constituency by-election.”

He noted that following widespread consultations with party members in Akwatia, the committee concluded that primaries would not be necessary.

The decision, Mr. Konadu said, was based on feedback from grassroots members, electoral area coordinators, polling station officers, traditional leaders, and opinion leaders within the constituency.

“Majority of the people said that for primaries, we should take it out, we shouldn’t conduct a primary in Akwatia and that is exactly what we followed. And then now comes to how we’ll get a suitable candidate. And we commissioned a research, people went into the constituency and gave them all names that had expressed interest.”

Interested individuals included former Member of Parliament for the area, Ama Sey, Lawyer Owiredu, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Daniel Nyame, and Osei Appiah.

He explained that, following the research conducted on the abovementioned names, the constituency reported back to the committee on who the suitable candidate would be according to the people.

“When it came, the party saw that they’ve settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu,” Jeff Konadu disclosed.

He noted that the party’s NEC had, on that note, exercised its powers by granting leadership in the region and constituency the go-ahead to engage further and follow due process to hold a formal acclamation event in due course to affirm Asumadu’s candidacy.

All the individuals who initially expressed interest in contesting the slot were present at the press conference.

Speaking on their behalf, Isaac Osei Appiah declared their unanimous support for Solomon Kwame Asumadu in the upcoming by-election.
