Omane Boamah, Murtala Ibrahim, Samuel Sarpong, 5 others confirmed dead in helicopter crash

The government has confirmed the death of eight individuals including key office holders in a helicopter that crashed in the Ashanti Region.

The helicopter, carrying eight persons made up of three crew members and five passengers, was traveling to Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The deceased are five government officials, including the Defence Minister, Omane Boamah, and three military officers.

8 feared dead in helicopter crash in Ashanti Region

They are Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence,
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment,
Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator,
Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman, NDC, and Samuel Aboagye.

The other three are Squadron Leader Peter, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo, who were members of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

“Government regrets to announce the demise of the following persons in the tragic crash,” Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said in a short address of the Nation.

He extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved families following the unfortunate incidents.

“The President and government extends our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades,” he stated.
