The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has petitioned the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to urgently address the ongoing disruption of water supply in the Effutu Municipality.

The lawmaker described the situation as a humanitarian concern affecting over 140,000 residents in his constituents.

In a letter dated August 21, Afenyo-Markin stated that his move is to urgently draw stakeholders attention to the disruption of water supply in the Effutu Municipality which has persisted unresolved for more than two weeks.

He emphasized that the majority of communities within the municipality remain without access to potable pipe-borne water, resulting in widespread hardship across critical sectors including households, health, education, and among others.

According to the MP, healthcare facilities are struggling to maintain hygiene standards.

“Hospitals, clinics, and health centres are unable to maintain the minimum standards of hygiene required for patient care. Schools and tertiary institutions are struggling to operate in the absence of safe water,” he highlighted the toll on residents and warn of an increased risk of cholera, and other waterborne diseases.

He further stated families are compelled to rely on irregular and costly private water suppliers, with the elderly, bearing the heaviest burden.

The letter also pointed to economic consequences, particularly for small businesses such as food vendors, hospitality operators, and artisans are unable to function, resulting in loss of income and a wider slowdown in local commerce.

The MP in an appeal requested clarity on the cause of the disruption and a timeline for restoration.

“I respectfully request that your outfit provides immediate clarification on the cause of this disruption and, more importantly, when residents should expect uninterrupted water supply to be fully restored.”
