Akwatia by-election: One arrested over ‘poster removal’ chaos

Police have arrested an individual for allegedly removing a candidate’s posters at a polling station during the ongoing Akwatia by-election.

The incident reportedly began when members believed to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were accused of tearing down posters belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.

The NDC alleged that NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were among those leading the poster removal.

In response, the NPP claimed that NDC election posters were not permitted to be displayed on election day.

This sparked tensions between the two parties, with both sides expressing concerns and trading accusations.

However, swift intervention by the police led to the arrest of a young man to help maintain order and ensure a smooth voting process. His political affiliation remains unknown.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, prompting the need to elect a new representative for the constituency.
