The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Ntim Fordjour, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to focus on addressing the urgent security challenges facing the country.

Mr. Fordjour expressed concern about Ghana’s current decline in peace and stability.

In a post cited on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the MP who also serves as Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee stated that the President’s utmost priority must be the nation’s security, rather than pursuing political opponents.

“Mr President, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and Chairman of National Security Council, for what it is worth, the deterioration of Ghana’s peace, safety and security under your watch in less than a year, must rather be your utmost concern rather than going hard after your political opponents,” he posted.

According to Ntim Fordjour, it is a “misplaced priority” for the government to use state security agencies to persecute members of the opposition.

“Stop killing ants with sledge hammer and fix our security. Exacting maximum force of state security apparatus on opposition activists at the least infraction is a misplaced priority,” he added.

NPP accuses NDC government of “fiddling” with anti-flood interventions as June 29 rains hit Accra

Backing his assertion on the country’s decline in peace, he cited global peace rankings, noting that crime rates are rising under the current administration.

“From 2nd Most peaceful country in Africa and 38th most peaceful in the world in 2021, Ghana’s peacefulness has dropped drastically to 7th in Africa and 61st in the world in 2025 under your regime,” he highlighted.

The Ranking Member pointed to the escalation of several violent conflicts nationwide.

He mentioned the escalation of the Bawku conflict; the emergence of the Bole-Sawla (Gbinyiri) conflict, which has resulted in over 31 deaths, several missing persons, 48,000 displaced individuals, and over 13,000 refugees in Côte d’Ivoire.

The intensification of the Nkwanta conflict; mysterious killings; deadly festival clashes; and electoral violence in Ablekuma North, among others.

Mr. Fordjour stressed that these are the “notable achievements of your less than 1 year regime.”

He reiterated his call on the President to prioritize restoring the peace and safety Ghana was known for before assuming office in January.

“Please restore Ghana to the once safe and peaceful country that was handed over to you on Jan 7.”
