World Egg Day: Poultry farmers appeal to government to revisit “Egg Day in SHS” initiative

Ghanaian poultry farmers have raised alarms about the decline in egg consumption, which has led to increased unemployment in the industry.

This plea was made during a seminar hosted by Sky Agro and Aquaculture Solutions Limited on Saturday, October 11, 2025, in celebration of World Egg Day.

The farmers have called on the government to revisit the “Egg Day in SHS” initiative, which they believe could provide a much-needed boost to the sector.

During a training session, they emphasised that incorporating eggs into the diet of Senior High School (SHS) students could be a game-changer.

“If the government could choose poultry farmers in every district to supply eggs to SHS students, it would greatly help us,” one farmer stated.

“Eggs are an affordable and nutritious food source, providing essential proteins and nutrients for growth and development. By supporting local poultry farmers, the government can also stimulate economic growth and create jobs.”

The farmers argued that providing a stable market for eggs would encourage consumption and support local farmers, ultimately leading to increased employment opportunities within the sector.

They pointed out that eggs would not only serve as a nutritious food source for SHS students but also enhance their health and academic performance.

Mr. Alfred Kwame Agbotsise, the Chief Executive Officer of Sky Agro and Aquaculture Solutions, shared his motivations for organising free seminars for poultry farmers across the country.

He believes that education and support are crucial for the sustainable growth of the poultry industry in Ghana.
