Women lack deserved recognition in Ghana music industry – Sista Afia

Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has voiced her frustration over what she describes as the lack of recognition for women in the music industry compared to their male counterparts.

During an interview on Y’adwumanie on Angel FM, the “Jeje” hitmaker expressed disappointment over the challenges female artistes continue to face despite their efforts and talent.

According to her, many hardworking female musicians are overlooked simply because the industry is more supportive and appreciative of male artistes.

“Women don’t get recognition in the industry the way the men do, and it’s painful. Sometimes it motivates me, but in a way, it’s sad because you’re doing the job and you aren’t being recognised.

“If you are an independent artiste and you invest so much into it, it’s more tedious than anything. But with all these, I just don’t look at it,” she said on Tuesday, October 4, 2025,

According to Sista Afia, the Ghanaian music industry has not created the rightful environment to support female musicians, making it difficult for them to thrive.

“I feel it’s one of those setbacks in the industry which doesn’t support us, the ladies. I look at the passion I have for music. I don’t know how I’m going to change the narrative or the mindset of people that they should focus on the females the way they are focusing on the men,” she added.

She appealed to industry stakeholders, fans, and music lovers to pay more attention to talented female artistes and give them equal opportunities.

“All I have to say is that they should also focus on us because being a woman in this game is not easy. We can’t watch the men take all the recognition. There are a lot of girls who are talented, but the industry should give us more opportunities,” she emphasized.
